What you need to do before turning your heating this winter

Testing your heating

Since it is likely your boiler will have been switched off over the summer months, it is a great idea to switch on your boiler and test your heating now before it starts to get cold. Our heating engineers here at BCU Plumbing recommend doing this because it can help prevent possible problems, such as:

- Blockages

- Corrosion

- Limescale build-up

Testing your heating now can also indicate if you have any faults that need sorting now before it gets too cold.

Bleeding your radiators

Our gas engineers always advise customers to bleed their radiators at the end of the summer. While your heating system has been turned off, it is quite likely that some of the radiators in your property have got pockets of air trapped in them. Bleeding the radiators ensures that any air trapped is released, resulting in a much more efficient energy system with maximum heat output.

Ventilation

Boilers can get dusty and grimy. It is also very easy to allow clutter to build up in your boiler cupboard. It is well worth putting in the time and effort to have a clean around your boiler area because allowing proper ventilation will support the boiler's function.

Temperature

The heating engineers here at BCU Plumbing would recommend that you gradually turn up the temperature of your boiler rather than turning it straight up to the optimal degrees.

Time for service

Any experienced heating engineer will suggest that it is ideal to have your boiler serviced once a year.  This allows for any faults to be detected, but also it ensures your boiler is running efficiently. Carrying out a boiler service before winter hits allows for any repairs to be completed before the heating is required regularly.
